He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia in 1984 and later completed his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in 1995. After marrying his wife, Amy, in 1983, Dr. Bean served in the United States Army for 20 years, including a deployment during Desert Storm, which required a one-year deferral before beginning veterinary school. Upon his return, he and his family relocated to Athens, where he completed his veterinary training. A defining moment in Dr. Bean’s life occurred at just 16 years old, when he had to take his family’s Boxer, Butch, to be euthanized due to cancer. Witnessing the pain and stress his dog endured during that final trip left a lasting impression and shaped his commitment to easing suffering whenever possible. That experience inspired his passion for providing end-of-life care that prioritizes comfort, dignity, and compassion for both pets and the people who love them. Dr. Bean is the founder and longtime owner of Piedmont Animal Hospital in Gray, Georgia, which he led until 2025. He and his wife have seven children and twelve grandchildren, and they continue to reside in Gray with their youngest son, Austin.
